Why Village Redevelopment Builds Nothing But Solar-Powered Apartments

Reimagining Housing for a More Sustainable, Connected, Renewable Energy Future

From the moment I became passionate about urban development and city planning, I envisioned communities that are not only walkable, social, and engaging but also energy-independent. This vision took root during my time in the United States Peace Corps, where I spent three years working with micro-entrepreneurs in Corinto, Nicaragua.

Unlike car-dependent U.S. cities, Nicaraguan towns are compact, bikeable, and full of vibrant street life. Kids played freely in the streets, families walked together in the evenings, and community spaces encouraged interaction. Returning to California, I struggled to adjust to the isolated, car-centric lifestyle that defines much of modern urban America.

These experiences shaped the foundation of Village Redevelopment. We don’t just build apartments—we reimagine communities.

Our Core Focus Areas:

Prioritize social interaction – Designed with shared courtyards and community spaces
Support car-free living – Loaner bikes, e-bikes, and surfboards for tenants
Embrace renewable energySolar-powered apartments with battery storage for energy independence
Promote sustainable infill developmentRepurposing and adapting existing structures instead of unnecessary new construction

We also explore community solar projects, enabling groups within a neighborhood to collectively invest in solar energy—reducing costs and promoting shared sustainability.

We know we can’t single-handedly solve climate change or America’s housing crisis. But we can lead by example—creating as many solar-powered, sustainable, community-oriented apartments as possible over the next 20–30 years.

Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Modern Living

As the world shifts towards renewable energy, reducing the carbon footprint of housing has become a top priority.

Solar energy is one of the most effective solutions for creating sustainable communities. By installing solar panels, apartment buildings can:
☀️ Reduce reliance on fossil fuels
Lower energy costs for tenants and landlords
🌍 Offset carbon emissions and contribute to a cleaner future

Through smart solar integration, we are proving that affordable, energy-independent housing isn’t just possible—it’s the future of urban living.

Financing the Future of Solar Housing

For our first four-unit redevelopment in North Park, San Diego, we partnered with Ygrene Energy Fund and Solar Heroes to finance our 14-kilowatt solar system with 20 kWh of battery storage.

💡 BEFORE SOLAR: Monthly power bills for all four units + shared courtyard: $800
AFTER SOLAR: Our system offsets 76% of grid energy use, significantly reducing electricity costs—even with two electric vehicles (EVs) charging.

Breaking Down the Numbers

💰 Total Solar Installation Cost: $72,000
💳 Monthly Financing Cost (30 years): $350
🔋 Energy Offset: 76%+ of total usage
📉 Net Savings: Estimated 33% lower energy costs (likely more as rates rise)

Unlike single-family homeowners, apartment landlords can spread solar costs across tenants, keeping fixed energy costs stable for decades. This approach helps reduce energy bills for renters while increasing long-term financial sustainability.

🔎 Real-Time Solar Data: Even at peak usage (4–9 pm), our battery storage system offsets costly grid power, further increasing savings!

Why Solar Panels for Apartments Are the Future of Development

1️⃣ Reduce Energy Bills & Lower Long-Term Costs

  • Fixed, predictable energy expenses instead of rising utility costs
  • Lower energy bills for renters and landlords

2️⃣ Energy Resilience & Blackout Protection

  • 20 kWh battery backup ensures power during grid outages
  • Shields against rolling blackouts & grid failures
  • Energy storage systems save excess energy for peak hours

3️⃣ Sustainability That Pays Off

  • 33%+ immediate energy savings, increasing over time
  • Zero emissions + improved energy independence

Implementing solar energy is not just environmentally responsible—it’s a smart financial strategy that ensures our communities are resilient and future-proof.

Solar Panel Options for Apartments

When selecting solar panels for apartment buildings, different solutions exist based on available space and tenant needs:

Rooftop Solar Panels – Ideal for multi-unit housing with available roof space
Balcony & Window Solar Panels – Small-scale solutions for urban apartment dwellers
Portable Solar Panels – For charging small appliances and EVs

Choosing the right solar solution depends on energy usage, budget, and available space. Monocrystalline solar panels are the most efficient and durable, while polycrystalline solar panels offer a more affordable alternative.

Community Solar Projects: Harnessing the Power of Shared Energy

In community solar projects, multiple households co-invest in a shared solar array. This model:
Reduces energy costs for all participants
Promotes clean energy in multi-unit housing
Makes solar power accessible to renters and lower-income households

By pooling resources, we can create larger solar installations—delivering greater efficiency and cost savings for all residents.
